Press release: Finland launches Erex system

Eress organisation announces the launch of Erex system in Finland

2017-01-12 “Finland puts Erex system into production and this is a milestone for the standardization of settling traction energy in Europe. Eress organisation has closely worked together with the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA) to get where we are today”, states Eress Director, Dyre Martin Gulbrandsen.

Through Erex system, FTA is now able to accurately settle, control and manage the energy consumed by trains in the different areas of Finland. “Erex system has been a key tool for opening the railway market in Finland and the whole process has followed the latest EU regulation, which has been our main objective” explains Juha-Matti Vilppo, Senior Officer and responsible for energy metering and billing at FTA.

“We have been very satisfied with the implementation of Erex and also proud of our contribution to a harmonized Erex system. The implementation has gone smooth. It has been much easier than expected. Therefore, I would recommend Erex system and Eress organisation to all Infrastructure Managers in Europe facing challenges with the implementation of EU rules and the opening of the railway and energy markets”, concludes Mr. Vilppo.

Eress is a non-profit organisation, jointly owned by its partners, committed to the development, implementation and supply of the Erex system. The Erex IT solution provides a thoroughly tested and established system for managing and billing consumed energy on trains. Erex makes possible to control and accurately bill the energy each train uses. Erex ensures that train operators pay just for the energy they use, since bills are based on precise energy measurement. Without Erex, bills are based on estimates. Accurate energy data is also the starting point for other environmental initiatives. Erex data makes possible to implement further measures to reduce energy use. With Erex trains can save up to 30 percent of the energy they consumed.

Eress is a partnership between Banedanmark (Rail Net Denmark), Infrabel (Belgian Railway Infrastructure Manager), Bane NOR (Norwegian Railway Infrastructure Manager), Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration), Liikennevirasto (Finnish Transport Agency), Vivens (Dutch railway energy procurement cooperative) and SBB CFF FFS (Swiss Federal Railways).
